Frequently asked questions
What is PAYE?
PAYE (Pay As You Earn) is HMRC's system for collecting Income Tax and National Insurance contributions from employees' wages before they are paid. As an employer, you are responsible for deducting the correct amounts and paying them to HMRC each month.
When do I need to register for PAYE?
You must register as an employer with HMRC before the first payday. If you wait until after paying your employee, you risk penalties. We recommend registering as soon as you know you will be taking on staff.
Do directors need to register for PAYE?
Yes, if the director is taking a salary from the company. Many directors pay themselves a small salary (often just above the National Insurance threshold) and register for PAYE to ensure NI contributions are recorded.
What reference numbers will I receive?
Once registered, HMRC will issue you an Employer PAYE reference number (also called a PAYE reference) and an Accounts Office reference number. Both are required to submit payroll and make payments to HMRC.
How long does PAYE registration take?
HMRC typically processes PAYE registrations within 5–10 working days, although it can take longer during busy periods. We recommend registering well before your first payday to allow enough time.
What information do I need to register for PAYE?
You will need your company name, Companies House registration number, registered address, the date you want to start paying employees, the number of employees, and details of any director taking a salary, including their National Insurance number and date of birth.
